The building of social rights in the Europe of the Six (1950-1972)

di Lorenzo Mechi
in Memoria e Ricerca n.s. 14 (2003), p. 69

Through the pressure of the trade unions and of some governments of the european nations in the CECA treaty series of rules were inserted in order to guarantee employment and to improve the job and living conditions of working classes. The good results obtained by the application of these rules, moved the governments of the “Six” to insert similar rules in the establishment of the CEE’s treaty. Such rules would have represented the foundation for their following evolution in the Seventies (when the juridical literature related to this subject will have increased) and for the progressive passage of the right owning from workers to citizens. The results of that double evolution would have been the Chart of workers foundamental social rights, signed in 1989, and the rights about the european citizenship, established in 1992 by the Maastricht Treaty.
