This paper examines the multiform nature of the violence that erupted during the Spanish Civil War, with particular emphasis on its symbolic dimension. To this end, its considers the propagandistic construction underpinning the representation of the «enemy» (los rojos) in the so-called Nationalist press during one moment of the war, aftermath of the fighting on the Madrid front and the advance of the Nationalist forces througt northern Spain.
